PROFESSOR VICTOR I. AKINMOLADUN BIODATA

Professor Victor I. Akinmoladun was born to Dr. Olufemi and Mrs. Adefolurin Akinmoladun in Ondo, Ondo State. Both parents were teachers before proceeding to the United States for further education in the late 1960s. He spent his early years with his grandparents—farmers in Ondo—while his parents were abroad.

He attended the little-known C.A.C. Primary School, Oke-Igbala, Ondo, for his primary education and Saint Thomas Aquinas College, Akure (1977–1982) for secondary education. In 1983, he was admitted to Obafemi Awolowo University to study Dentistry and earned the BCh.D. degree in 1989. He completed his housemanship at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Benin City, and served the National Youth Service Corps at General Hospital, Ikeja, Lagos.

He worked briefly with the Lagos State Hospitals Management Board before traveling to the United Kingdom for specialist training. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FDSRCS) and the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland (FFDRCS). He is also a Fellow of the West African College of Surgeons, and a former member of the Board, Faculty of Dental Surgery of the College.

Upon returning to Nigeria, he worked as a Consultant with the Ondo State Hospitals Management Board at the State Specialist Hospital, Akure, and later joined the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan. He was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2008.

He earned a Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Chemical Pathology from the University of Ibadan in 2008, a Certificate in Immunology and Molecular Laboratory Techniques from Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda, in 2012, and a Ph.D. (Basic Science – Immunology) from the University of Ibadan in 2021. He currently teaches Tumour Immunology to M.Sc. students in the Department of Immunology.

In 2019, he was promoted to the rank of Professor by the University of Ibadan. He has co-authored over 80 scholarly articles and two book chapters. He received the University of Ibadan Senate Research Grant in 2012 and the TETFund Research and Training Grant in 2014. He is also a multiple-time recipient of the Smile Train (USA) Travel Fellowship for training in cleft lip and palate surgery.

Professor Akinmoladun has served the University in several capacities. He was Sub-Dean (Postgraduate) of the Faculty of Dentistry and is currently the Head of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He served as Regional Coordinator (South West) for Continuing Medical Education with the Nigerian Medical Association. He is a peer reviewer for many journals and an examiner for Dental Schools in Nigeria and the West African College of Surgeons.

He served as Deputy Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee (2015–2016) and later as Chairman/Director of Clinical Services, Research and Training (2016–2020) at the University College Hospital, Ibadan. He has undergone several leadership courses, including the Policy, Strategy and Leadership Course (PSLC) at the National Institute, Kuru, near Jos.

Outside academia, he is a Pastor at the Redeemed Christian Church of God and a Board Member of the Redeemer’s Health Centre, Ibadan. He is affiliated with numerous professional societies including:

Nigerian Association of Cleft Lip and Palate,

British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons,

International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons,

African Organisation for Research and Training in Cancer (AORTIC),

Nigerian Society for Immunology.

He was Secretary of the International Association for Dental Research (Nigerian Division) and of the Nigerian Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. He is married to Dr. Janet A. Akinmoladun of the Department of Radiology, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan.
