President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated former Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose, on his 65th birthday, describing him as a bold and influential figure in Nigeria’s political space.
In a goodwill message on Friday 14, the President recalled Fayose’s rise to national prominence in 2003 when he became Ekiti’s second elected governor while Tinubu was serving his own second term in Lagos. He noted that since then, the former governor has remained a force whose influence extends beyond Ekiti State.
Tinubu acknowledged that Fayose’s first tenure ended controversially, attributing the development to what he called an abuse of presidential authority at the time. Despite that setback, he said, Fayose showed unusual resilience and calmness in the face of adversity.
The President highlighted Fayose’s 2014 return to office—an electoral comeback he described as one of the most remarkable in recent Nigerian politics, given that Fayose defeated two incumbent governors at different times.
He praised the former governor’s outspoken style, saying Fayose is known for taking clear positions on issues without fear or favour. According to Tinubu, this steadfastness has earned him admiration among supporters who fondly call him Osokomole and Ore Mekunnu (friend of the poor).
Tinubu also commended Fayose’s record in office, citing improvements in road infrastructure, education, healthcare, and signature projects such as the State High Court Complex and the new Governor’s Office.
Describing Fayose as a political ally and “younger brother,” the President expressed appreciation for his support. He prayed for the former governor’s continued good health and deeper commitment to service.
“Happy birthday, Osokomole,” Tinubu added.
