University of Ilorin, LASUSTECH Awarded Accreditation for New Courses by NUC

The National Universities Commission has granted accreditation to new academic programs at the University of Ilorin and the Lagos State University of Science and Technology, Ikorodu.

The University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) received approval to offer 37 programs, including Igbo and Hausa languages. These programs were presented during the accreditation exercise held in October/November 2024. LASUSTECH, on the other hand, secured accreditation for 22 courses.

Mr. Kunle Akogun, the Director of Corporate Affairs at UNILORIN, released a press statement that stated, “UNILORIN secures 100 per cent NUC accreditation With 36 of the 37 courses it presented for the National Universities Commission accreditation exercise, securing full accreditation and the remaining one getting interim accreditation.”

The statement further mentioned that, “The result of the accreditation exercise carried out in October/November 2024, which has just been released, was contained in a letter dated April 30, 2025, and addressed to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Wahab Egbewole (SAN), by the Executive Secretary of the commission, Prof Abdullahi Ribadu.”

The letter, signed on behalf of Prof. Ribadu by Engr. Abraham Chundusu, the NUC Acting Director of Accreditation, indicated that 36 courses were fully accredited, while only one, Hausa, received interim accreditation.

The statement also noted that no course was denied accreditation, and the Faculty of Management Sciences and Finance at UNILORIN also earned full accreditation.

“From the Faculty of Basic Medical Science, Anatomy, which was the only programme presented, attracted full accreditation, just as Computer Science at the Faculty of Communication and Information Sciences was also granted full accreditation.”

“From the Faculty of Education, all 17 academic programmes presented were granted full accreditation, while from the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Chemical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering were fully accredited.”

“From the Faculties of Environmental Sciences, Clinical Sciences and Pharmaceutical Sciences, each of the programmes presented was given full accreditation.”

“From the Faculty of Physical Sciences and Social Sciences, three academic programmes were accredited, while four were granted full accreditation from the Faculty of Social Sciences.”

“Of the two courses, Igbo and Hausa, that were presented for accreditation from the Faculty of Arts, the former was granted full accreditation while the latter was granted interim accreditation,” the statement added.

Professor Egbewole (SAN) commented that this achievement reflects the continuous investment in human and material resources by the university administration.

A statement released by Mr. Lanre Kuye, the spokesperson for LASUSTECH, which was obtained by The PUNCH on Tuesday, highlighted that the full accreditation of 22 out of 25 academic programs demonstrated an outstanding performance for the relatively new university.

LASUSTECH officially transitioned from Lagos State Polytechnic to a university on February 2, 2022.

The official summary released by the NUC, which was reviewed by The PUNCH, revealed that 88 percent of the programs evaluated achieved full accreditation, while the remaining 12 percent received interim accreditation because of staffing gaps.

According to the statement, no program was denied accreditation.

“Highlights across faculties show that for the Faculty of Administration, six programmes: Accounting, Business Administration, Marketing, Actuarial Science, Banking and Finance, and Office and Information Management, secure full accreditation with scores ranging from 86.9 per cent to 95.6 per cent.”

“In Agriculture, while most programmes, such as Animal Science, Crop Science, and Agricultural Extension, scored above 80 per cent, Agricultural Economics and Farm Management narrowly missed full marks due to staffing issues, recording an 80.9 per cent total score but only 68.6 per cent in staffing, resulting in an interim accreditation.”

“The Science Faculty had a similar situation, where Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry received interim status despite overall scores above 80 per cent, again due to subpar staffing scores.”

“However, programmes like Physics with Electronics, Mathematics, Microbiology, and Statistics scored above 90 per cent, with Physics and Mathematics each earning an impressive 96.6 per cent,” Kuye stated.

He further mentioned that the faculties of computing, environmental sciences, social sciences, and communication and media studies also performed well, with all their programs receiving full accreditation.

He also noted that Mass Communication and Industrial Design courses scored 92.7 percent and 95.6 percent, respectively, while Economics led overall with 97.4 percent.

“All programmes accredited were reported as ‘newly matured’, emphasising the university’s recent transition to full degree-awarding status under the NUC framework.”

“The present accreditation is valid until 2029, marking a solid five-year cycle of academic assurance,” he stated.
