Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), alongside 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and all 44 local government chairpersons in the state.
The governor formally announced his resignation in a letter addressed to the chairman of the NNPP in Diso–Chiranchi Ward, Gwale Local Government Area. The resignation takes effect from Sunday, 25 January 2026.
In the letter, Mr Yusuf expressed gratitude to the party for the opportunity to serve under its platform, noting that his decision followed deep reflection.
“I write with a deep sense of gratitude to formally notify the leadership of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) of my decision to resign my membership of the party, with effect from Sunday, 25 January 2026,” the letter read.
He acknowledged the support he received from the party’s leadership and members across Kano State since 2022, describing his time in the NNPP as a significant chapter in his political journey.
The governor attributed his decision to persistent internal crises within the party, arising from leadership disputes and protracted legal battles, many of which are currently before the courts.
According to him, the disputes have led to growing disenfranchisement among party members, deepening divisions within the party’s structure and creating uncertainty at both state and national levels.
“These developments have resulted in cracks that appear increasingly irreconcilable,” he said.

Mr Yusuf stated that his resignation was taken in the best interest of Kano State and its people, stressing that the decision was made in good faith and without ill will.
He reaffirmed his commitment to peace, unity, and the continued progress of the state.
