ASUU directs members to begin nationwide strike

Academic activities have begun to shut down in some federal universities across the country as members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) make good on a national directive to withdraw their services over delayed June 2025 salaries.

ASUU branches at the University of Jos and the University of Abuja have already embarked on strike action, citing a resolution of the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) which mandates that members should halt work if salaries are delayed beyond three days.

Confirming the development in Abuja on Monday, ASUU President, Prof. Emmanuel Piwuna, told RootedScopeMedia that the action is a direct enforcement of the union’s “No Pay, No Work” stance. He described the delay in salary payment as “worsening an already difficult situation” for lecturers.

“Our members are suffering,” Piwuna said. “Since we were moved from IPPIS to GIFMIS, delays have become constant. Despite engagements with the Minister of Education and the Accountant General, there’s been no solution.”

The ASUU president added that the union would not continue to render services while members remain unpaid. He warned that more branches would join the strike if the government fails to address the salary issue promptly.

He said, “We agreed at NEC that in any month where salaries are delayed beyond three days, our members should withdraw services. The action in Jos and Abuja is simply in line with that resolution.”

As of press time, there has been no official response from the Federal Government.
