The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has elected Professor Chris Piwuna of the University of Jos as its new national president. This leadership transition was formalized at the union’s 23rd National Delegates Congress, held at the University of Benin, Edo State.
Professor Piwuna emerged victorious over Professor Adamu Babayo of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi, in a tightly contested election. With this outcome, he succeeds Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, bringing an end to his tenure.
The congress brought together academic representatives from institutions nationwide to address critical challenges facing Nigeria’s tertiary education system. Discussions spanned issues such as university funding, earned academic allowances, the migration of skilled academic staff abroad, autonomy of universities, and improved welfare for lecturers.
Professor Piwuna’s emergence comes at a pivotal time for ASUU as the union continues its advocacy for structural reforms within Nigeria’s higher education sector.
