ASUU SHUTS DOWN UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS OVER ‘AMPUTATED’ JANUARY, FEBRUARY SALARIES

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) chapter at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has declared an indefinite strike over what it described as “amputated” salaries paid to its members for January and February 2026.

The decision was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of an emergency congress of the union held on Tuesday.

The communiqué was signed by the chairperson of the union, Idowu Kehinde, and the secretary, Adesina Arikawe.

According to the union, the strike will commence on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, and will continue until the university management pays the outstanding balance of the affected salaries.

ASUU said the decision followed what it described as an extensive deliberation on the salary deductions implemented by the university management over the past two months.

The union alleged that the institution paid incomplete salaries to its members in January and February.

It stated that lecturers on the Akoka campus did not receive their Earned Academic Allowance, while those at the Idi-Araba campus were not paid both Earned Academic Allowance and Clinical Allowance.

The union condemned the action of the university management, describing it as unacceptable and unfair to its members.

ASUU therefore directed its members to withdraw their services with immediate effect until the university management pays the full salaries for January and February.

The union added that the strike would remain in force until the outstanding payments are settled in full.
