ATIKU ABUBAKAR RESIGNS FROM PDP, CITES PARTY’S DEVIATION FROM FOUNDATIONAL PRINCIPLES

Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has formally resigned his membership from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), ending a decades-long association with the political platform he helped build and under which he served two terms as Nigeria’s Vice President from 1999 to 2007.

In a letter dated July 14, 2025, and addressed to the Chairman of the PDP in Jada 1 Ward, Jada Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Atiku cited “irreconcilable differences” and the party’s deviation from its founding ideals as the reasons behind his decision to exit.

“It is with a heavy heart that I resign, recognizing the irreconcilable differences that have emerged,” Atiku stated, noting that the party’s current trajectory “diverges from the foundational principles we stood for.”

The seasoned politician and former presidential candidate expressed deep gratitude to the PDP for the opportunities it afforded him over the years. “Serving two full terms as Vice President of Nigeria and being a Presidential candidate twice has been one of the most significant chapters of my life,” he wrote.

Atiku, who described himself as a “founding father of this esteemed Party,” lamented that the decision to resign was heartbreaking. He, however, maintained that it had become a necessary step given the direction the PDP was headed.

“I wish the Party and its leadership all the best in the future. Thank you once again for the opportunities and support,” he concluded.

The letter was officially acknowledged and stamped as received on July 14, 2025, by Hammadam Abubakar on behalf of the PDP Ward Chairman.

Atiku’s resignation is expected to send shockwaves through the political landscape, especially as preparations for the 2027 general elections begin to gather momentum. His next political move remains the subject of intense speculation.

The PDP leadership is yet to issue an official response to the development as of the time of filing this report.
