Atiku, Mark, PDP Leaders Mull Coalition to Oust APC in 2027

ABUJA – Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Senate President David Mark, alongside other prominent figures in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on Tuesday, intensified moves to form a united opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The high-level meeting, held behind closed doors at the Transcorp Hilton in Abuja, brought together influential party stakeholders who expressed concern over the current state of the PDP and governance under the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a communiqué issued after the meeting, the leaders lamented what they described as the “deteriorating condition” of the PDP since its loss in the 2023 presidential election and the ousting of Dr. Iyorchia Ayu as National Chairman.

They also accused the APC-led Federal Government of undermining democratic institutions and using state power to intimidate opposition voices. The group described Nigeria under President Bola Tinubu as “a diminished nation,” citing worsening economic indicators and hardship for ordinary citizens.

“The APC came to power on the wings of propaganda and empty promises. Today, Nigeria is worse off,” the communiqué read in part.

The PDP leaders blamed recent defections within the party, particularly among elected officials, on sustained pressure and inducement by the APC.

They called on party faithful and other opposition blocs to close ranks and support a broader coalition committed to restoring democratic values, national unity, economic revival, and the fight against corruption.

Among those in attendance were former PDP National Chairman, Uche Secondus; ex-governors Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto), Liyel Imoke (Cross River), Babangida Aliyu (Niger), Sam Egwu (Ebonyi), and Sule Lamido (Jigawa); as well as Senator Ben Obi and several former national officers of the party.

The proposed coalition is expected to unveil its strategy in the coming months.
