ATIKU, OBI, AMAECHI, KWANKWASO, OTHERS LEAD ‘SAVE DEMOCRACY’ PROTEST IN ABUJA

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, ex-Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, ex-Senate President David Mark, former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola, and former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal, on Wednesday, led a protest in Abuja demanding what they described as the protection of Nigeria’s democracy.

The group, under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and allied political interests, marched to the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) under the banner of the “Save Nigeria Democracy” protest.

The protesters accused the electoral body of alleged partisanship in favour of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), a claim INEC has repeatedly denied in similar past allegations.

Hundreds of supporters, including members of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, joined the demonstration, which moved through major streets in the Federal Capital Territory.

Placards carried by the protesters bore inscriptions such as “Hands off our courts” and “Judges must give justice,” reflecting their grievances over recent political developments.

Atiku, in a post shared on his verified X handle, said the protest was peaceful and aimed at defending democratic values.

“Myself and other leaders of the ADC are peacefully protesting against the partisanship of the electoral umpire,” he wrote, adding that the demonstration was intended to “safeguard democracy and prevent the enthronement of dictatorship.”
