As part of the activities marking the 2025 International Nurses Week, the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo – Nigerian Nursing Students Association organized a thought-provoking lecture delivered by the Ondo State Family Planning Coordinator, Mrs. Agunbiade Elizabeth Opeyemi. The event brought together nursing students, healthcare professionals, and academic leaders to reflect on the evolving roles of nurses in today’s healthcare landscape.
The lecture, themed “The Versatile Nurse: Exploring Opportunities Beyond the Hospital Wall,” emphasized the critical need for nurses to think beyond conventional roles and embrace emerging opportunities across sectors.

Mrs. Agunbiade, a nurse, seasoned family planning expert, and passionate advocate for reproductive health, shared insights on how nurses can thrive in diverse roles — including public health advocacy, health education, research, community mobilization, policy development, media engagement, and entrepreneurship.
“Nurses are no longer confined to bedside care alone. They are change-makers, educators, communicators, and community leaders,” she stated. “In this digital age and evolving global health space, the world needs nurses who are flexible, innovative, and prepared to lead.”
She highlighted her journey from clinical practice to becoming a state coordinator, using her platform to champion family planning and maternal health across Ondo State. Her experience underscored the importance of leveraging nursing knowledge in non-clinical settings to improve population health outcomes.

The Dean, School of Nursing, Prof. Edward M., praised Mrs. Agunbiade for her eye-opening lecture and reaffirmed UNIMED’s commitment to nurturing well-rounded nurses who can serve effectively within and beyond hospital walls.
Participants at the event described the lecture as timely, enlightening, and motivating — particularly for nursing students aspiring to build impactful careers.
The Nurses Week celebration continues with various workshops and community outreach programs designed to honor the nursing profession’s critical role in national development.
