In a bold move to strengthen Nigeria’s metal and steel industry, the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Steel Development, has empowered 535 youths with hands-on training and essential tools under a specialized bootcamp programme held in Onitsha.
The training, which drew participants from different parts of the country, focused on equipping young Nigerians with practical skills in metal works—an industry seen as critical to industrialization and national development.
Speaking at the closing ceremony held at the Metallurgical Training Institute, Onitsha, the Minister of Steel Development, Shuaibu Abubakar Audu, emphasized that the initiative is part of a broader plan to bridge the growing skills gap in the metal and steel sector. He noted that similar training programmes will be held periodically to ensure continuous capacity building among the nation’s youth.
“This bootcamp is more than just training; it is about creating jobs, building careers, and unlocking the potential of our young people to drive industrial growth,” the Minister stated.
With the successful completion of the first batch, the government is optimistic that such interventions will not only reduce unemployment but also reposition Nigeria’s steel industry for global competitiveness.
