CHIMAMANDA ADICHIE ALLEGES MEDICAL NEGLIGENCE IN SON’S DEATH AT LAGOS HOSPITAL

Renowned Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has alleged that medical negligence at a Lagos hospital led to the death of her 21-month-old son following a medical procedure.

According to reports, Adichie said her son was taken to a private hospital for a medical procedure as part of preparations for further treatment abroad. She alleged that errors occurred during and after the procedure, including inadequate post-procedure monitoring, which resulted in severe complications.

The author claimed that her son became unresponsive shortly after the procedure and later suffered critical medical distress. Despite efforts to revive him, he was pronounced dead the following day. Adichie described the incident as avoidable and attributed it to what she termed gross medical negligence.

The allegation has sparked widespread public reaction, with many Nigerians calling for a thorough investigation and stricter enforcement of medical standards in private health facilities. As of the time of reporting, the hospital involved has not issued a detailed public response, while relevant medical regulatory authorities are yet to announce any formal action.

The incident has renewed national debate on patient safety, accountability, and quality of healthcare delivery in Nigeria.
