COMMANDER OF US AFRICOM VISITS PRESIDENT TINUBU, MEETS NIGERIAN SECURITY CHIEFS

The Commander of the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), General Dagvin Anderson, paid a courtesy visit to President Bola Tinubu on Sunday, 8 February 2026, in Abuja, in a show of continued military and diplomatic cooperation between the two nations.

The delegation, which included the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria’s Charge d’Affairs, Keith Heffern, Senior Foreign Policy Adviser for AFRICOM, Ambassador Peter Vrooman, and Command Sergeant Major Garric M. Banfield, Command Senior Enlisted Leader of AFRICOM, was received by President Tinubu and key Nigerian security officials.

During the visit, discussions reportedly focused on regional security challenges, military cooperation, and strategies to enhance stability in West Africa.

The meeting also brought together top Nigerian security and defence personnel, including the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (Rtd); Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Olufemi Oluyede; Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen Waidi Shaibu; Chief of Defence Intelligence, Lt.-Gen Emmanuel Uandiandeye; Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, Mohammed Mohammed; and Director-General of the Department of State Services, Tosin Ajayi.

This visit underscores the United States’ commitment to strengthening security partnerships with Nigeria amid ongoing regional security challenges.
