The National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, has attributed the prevailing insecurity in Nigeria to entrenched corruption and the compromise of law enforcement agencies.
Speaking at the 9th Oba Sikiru Adetona Annual Professorial Chair Lecture on Governance at Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, Ribadu highlighted the corrosive impact of corruption on national security. The lecture, titled “Corruption and National Security: Impacts and Consequences,” was delivered on his behalf by the Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Mr. Oluwatosin Ajayi.
“We cannot meaningfully address Nigeria’s security challenges without acknowledging the deep-rooted role of corruption,” Ribadu said. “It has eroded public trust, weakened institutional effectiveness, and, in many cases, fostered a culture of impunity.”
He cited the diversion of funds meant for defense procurement and the bypassing of due process in arms deals as key factors that have hindered the nation’s ability to effectively respond to threats.
Despite the grim assessment, Ribadu expressed optimism that the country’s security architecture could be revitalized through transparent leadership, institutional reform, and a renewed commitment to integrity.
