DABIRI-EREWA SLAMS UK MINISTER KEMI BADENOCH OVER FALSE CLAIM ON NIGERIAN CITIZENSHIP LAW

The Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has refuted claims by UK Minister for Business and Trade, Kemi Badenoch, that Nigerian law prevents her from transmitting citizenship to her children.

Speaking on a current affairs programme aired on a cable television station, Dabiri-Erewa described Badenoch’s assertion as “misleading” and “completely false.”

She pointed to Section 25(1)(c) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which stipulates that any person born outside Nigeria is entitled to citizenship if either parent is a Nigerian citizen.

According to her, “This is clearly stated in our constitution. The narrative suggesting that Nigerian women cannot confer citizenship on their children is entirely untrue.”

The NiDCOM boss also condemned what she called an attempt to denigrate Nigeria on the international stage, stressing that while the country supports its diaspora population, patriotism cannot be legislated or imposed.

“You can’t be forced to love your country, but misinformation like this must be corrected,” she added.
