FAKE COCOA DEAL: BUSINESSMAN LOSES ₦36 MILLION, SUSPECT ARRESTED IN AKURE

The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a man, identified as Ilegbemi Olusola Jacob, over allegations of defrauding a businessman of ₦36 million through a fake cocoa supply transaction.

According to a petition by the victim, Adegboyo Sunday, the suspect posed as a legitimate cocoa merchant and collected the money in July 2025, promising to deliver 5.56 tons of cocoa beans. However, the goods were never supplied, and the suspect reportedly gave false assurances that the cocoa would come from Taraba State before disappearing.

Police operatives, using technological tools and the expertise of the Scorpion Squad, traced the suspect to his hideout in Akure, leading to his arrest. The development highlights the Command’s commitment to intelligence-led policing under the leadership of Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM.

The suspect is currently in police custody and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.

While commending the IGP’s proactive approach, Commissioner of Police, Ondo State Command, CP Adebowale Lawal, psc(+), mnips, urged residents and investors to exercise caution in business dealings, advising thorough verification of partners to avoid falling victim to scams. He reiterated that the Command remains dedicated to dismantling criminal networks and protecting legitimate business interests across the state.
