FCCPC Summons Air Peace Over Non-Refund Complaints

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission has summoned the management of Air Peace following multiple complaints from passengers over unrefunded ticket fares — including those arising from flights cancelled by the airline itself.

This was contained in a statement issued by the Director of Corporate Affairs at the Commission, Ondaje Ijagwu, who noted that the alleged conduct may amount to a breach of Sections 130(1)(a), 130(1)(b), and 130(2)(b) of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act, 2018.

The provisions cited affirm the right of consumers to receive prompt refunds when services paid for in advance are not delivered as a result of the provider’s failure.

According to the FCCPC, a formal summons dated June 13 has been issued, directing Air Peace to appear before the Commission at its headquarters in Abuja on Monday, June 23.

The move is based on the Commission’s powers under Sections 32 and 33 of the Act, which provide for enforcement and penalties, including fines and possible imprisonment, in the event of non-compliance.

The airline is also expected to submit a full report of all refund-related complaints over the past 12 months, a list of cancelled flights, evidence of refunds processed, and documentation of efforts made to mitigate consumer dissatisfaction.

It would be recalled that in December 2024, the Commission launched a separate investigation into allegations of excessive ticket pricing by the same airline — a probe that led to a legal challenge from Air Peace, seeking to block the inquiry.

The FCCPC, however, maintained that the current summons is unrelated to the earlier investigation and reiterated its commitment to consumer protection and enforcement of legal standards across the aviation sector.
