FG APPLAUDS FINNISH COURT OVER EKPA’S JAIL TERM

The Federal Government has applauded the conviction of Simon Ekpa, a pro-Biafra agitator, by a Finnish court, describing the judgment as a victory for justice and a boost to Nigeria-Finland relations.

The Päijät-Häme District Court in Finland had on Monday sentenced Ekpa to six years in prison after finding him guilty of terrorism-related offences.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, in a statement on Tuesday, said the ruling was significant for the many Nigerians whose lives and businesses had been disrupted by violent activities allegedly fuelled by Ekpa and his allies.

According to Idris, Ekpa’s campaigns had over the years resulted in the loss of lives, destruction of property, and attempts to destabilise Nigeria’s peace and sovereignty.

He noted that the Finnish judiciary’s action validated Nigeria’s position on the matter and sent a warning to extremists worldwide that justice would eventually catch up with those who promote violence.

The minister reaffirmed President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to defending the nation’s unity and sovereignty, stressing that the government would continue to deploy diplomatic, military, and legal instruments to safeguard citizens.

Idris also called on individuals misled by Ekpa to renounce violence and embrace peace.

The government, he added, appreciated the efforts of the Office of the National Security Adviser, the Armed Forces, intelligence services, police, and the Ministry of Justice for their role in securing the country against threats.
