The Federal Government is ending the Bilateral Education Agreement (BEA) Scholarship Programme for university students studying abroad. The decision was attributed to improvements in local tertiary institutions and limited public funds.
“Every course Nigerians travel abroad to study through the BEA is now available and often of higher quality within our own universities and polytechnics,” said Education Minister Morufu Olatunji Alausa. “It is no longer justifiable to fund overseas studies with public resources when local alternatives exist.”
Alausa stated that funds would instead be redirected toward strengthening Nigeria’s higher education system.
Students currently enrolled under the programme will continue to receive funding until they complete their studies.
Since assuming office in May 2023, President Bola Tinubu has implemented economic reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidies and a relaxed exchange rate policy. These actions have contributed to inflation but are considered necessary for long-term fiscal stability.
While the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has backed these reforms, it also acknowledged that poverty and food insecurity remain widespread.
