FG Moves to Avert Lokoja Gridlock, Orders Rehab of Loko–Oweto Road

The Federal Government has ordered the immediate rehabilitation of the Loko–Oweto–Agatu Road in Nasarawa State amid fears of flooding on the Abuja–Lokoja highway.

The Minister of State for Works, Mohammed Bello Goronyo, gave the directive to the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) during a stakeholders’ meeting with the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners and the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria.

Goronyo explained that the alternative route would ease movement if flooding disrupts traffic on the Abuja–Lokoja corridor. He also disclosed that the Federal Executive Council approved emergency works on critical bridges, including Lagos’ Carter and Third Mainland bridges and the Donga Bridge in Taraba State.

According to him, the ministry is battling enormous workloads across the country, listing major projects such as Abuja–Kaduna–Kano, Sokoto–Zaria, Lagos–Sokoto, Lagos–Badagry, Lagos–Calabar, and the Akwanga–Jos–Bauchi–Gombe Trans-Sahara route.

He commended President Bola Tinubu for what he described as “unwavering commitment to infrastructure” and praised the Minister of Works, David Umahi, for engineering expertise on ongoing projects.

FERMA’s Managing Director, Dr. Chukwuemeka Agbasi, said the agency was focusing on economic corridors and updating traffic data to improve planning. He added that a technical working group was drafting a new road maintenance strategy.

NARTO president, Alhaji Yusuf Lawal Othman, applauded the government’s introduction of Compressed Natural Gas buses, saying it had reduced operational costs by over 30 per cent.

He further revealed that from October 1, no truck will be allowed to load more than 45,000 litres of fuel, in line with new axle load enforcement by the Ministry of Petroleum Resources and NMDPRA, a move expected to protect roads from damage.
