FG TO RECEIVE GROUNDBREAKING HIV PREVENTION DRUG IN NIGERIA

The federal government has confirmed that consignments of Lenacapavir, a new long-acting HIV prevention drug, are set to arrive in Nigeria in March 2026.

According to the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), preparations are in full swing to introduce Lenacapavir, an injectable pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) taken only twice a year, as part of efforts to curb the HIV epidemic.

In clinical trials, the drug has been shown to significantly lower the risk of HIV infection, offering near-total protection. NACA said the rollout will follow a structured, quality-assured approach, targeting priority states across the country.

The agency revealed that regulatory approval has been secured from the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), and readiness assessments have been completed in 10 states, including Lagos, Kano, and Akwa Ibom.

NACA has also trained trainers in Abuja, who will cascade the knowledge to healthcare workers in the selected states. The initiative will be supported with information, education, and communication materials to boost awareness and encourage uptake of the new HIV prevention option.
