FG Unveils National Energy Master Plan, Urges States to Drive Power Sector Investment

The Federal Government has officially unveiled a new National Energy Master Plan, tasking sub-national governments to step up investment in the electricity sector as part of a broader effort to expand access and promote energy efficiency across the country.

The plan, developed by the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), was recently approved by the Federal Executive Council and is now regarded as Nigeria’s strategic roadmap for energy transition and sustainability.

Among its key priorities, the document outlines a nationwide solarisation programme aimed at scaling up electricity generation through off-grid renewable sources. It sets an ambitious target of 30,000 megawatts from renewable energy, while also encouraging the adoption of electric vehicles as cleaner alternatives to fossil-fuel-powered transport.

In a statement issued by the ECN, the Commission disclosed that the Kogi State Government has expressed readiness to leverage the policy document to attract investment into its power sector.

The Governor of Kogi State, Ahmed Usman Ododo, made a courtesy visit to the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja to discuss possible areas of collaboration. He was received by the Director-General of ECN, Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, who described the governor’s visit as a demonstration of political will to support Nigeria’s energy transformation agenda.

Dr. Abdullahi noted that strong state-level engagement will be critical to the successful implementation of the plan, particularly in ensuring equitable access to clean and affordable energy nationwide.

The newly launched energy framework is expected to serve as the backbone of Nigeria’s long-term energy strategy, with emphasis on diversification, innovation, and sustainability.
