The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions have rejected the sharing formula for the recently approved N50bn Earned Allowances by the Federal Government.
The two unions, under the umbrella of the Joint Action Committee, JAC, accused the government of favouritism in the disbursement of the funds meant for university-based unions, including SSANU, NASU, the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, and the National Association of Academic Technologists, NAAT.
In a joint statement titled “Unjust distribution of the approved N50 billion for university unions” and signed by the JAC Chairman and SSANU President, Mohamed Ibrahim, alongside NASU’s General Secretary, Peters Adeyemi, the unions expressed deep displeasure over what they described as a skewed and unfair allocation.
They alleged that 80 per cent of the funds had been allocated to ASUU alone, leaving the remaining 20 per cent to be shared by SSANU, NASU and NAAT.
Describing the formula as “lopsided, grossly unfair, totally unacceptable, and capable of creating industrial disharmony,” the statement said the development only further entrenched the divide between academic and non-academic staff in Nigerian universities.
“A harmonious and productive academic environment can only be achieved when all stakeholders are treated with respect, dignity, equity and fairness,” the unions maintained.
They warned that the current sharing structure, if not reviewed, could trigger avoidable tension across campuses.
