As Nigeria joins the rest of the world to mark the 2025 International Day to End Obstetric Fistula, First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has called for bold and comprehensive action to eliminate the condition, which she describes as both preventable and treatable.
In a statement released to commemorate the day, Mrs. Tinubu said this year’s theme, “Breaking the Cycle: Preventing Fistula Worldwide,” underscores the urgent need to intensify efforts to prevent obstetric fistula and support affected women.
The First Lady decried the continued silent suffering of many Nigerian women who live with the condition—often in isolation and under social stigma—for simply attempting to give birth. She emphasized the need to reject such societal neglect and embrace policies that promote healing and dignity.
According to her, effective prevention requires a multifaceted approach: strengthening maternal health services, putting an end to child marriage, empowering women and girls through education, and ensuring skilled care throughout the pregnancy journey.
The First Lady’s message is a reminder of the ongoing challenges in maternal healthcare and the pressing need to prioritize women’s health, rights, and agency in national development.
