Flood Alert: NIHSA Warns 27 States, Calls for Urgent Preparedness

The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has raised concern over imminent flooding expected to hit 27 states between July 22 and August 5, urging relevant authorities to brace for impact.

In a flood outlook issued Tuesday, the agency listed vulnerable states to include Lagos, Kogi, Anambra, Bayelsa, Delta, Ondo, Rivers, Benue, Kebbi, and the Federal Capital Territory, among others. NIHSA said the alert covers 739 communities spread across 162 local government areas.

It called on state governments, emergency response agencies, and local stakeholders to put evacuation plans in motion and scale up sensitisation in flood-prone areas to avert loss of lives and property.

“This is not the time for complacency,” NIHSA warned, stressing the urgency of preparedness as the country enters a high-risk phase of the rainy season.
