Flood Kills 20, Submerges 50 Houses in Niger State

No fewer than 20 persons have lost their lives while over 50 houses were submerged following a devastating flood in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State.

The tragic incident, which occurred on Wednesday, affected two communities — Tiffin Maza and Anguwan Hausawa — after a torrential downpour wreaked havoc across the area.

Confirming the incident to the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), the Director-General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), Abdullahi Baba Arah, said the disaster left scores displaced and properties destroyed.

According to him, three survivors — a woman and her two children — are currently receiving treatment at the Mokwa General Hospital, while rescue and recovery operations are ongoing as of the time of filing this report.

In the wake of the tragedy, Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has extended his condolences to families affected by the flood. The governor’s message was conveyed in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim.

Governor Bago assured that the state government is committed to supporting the victims and mitigating the impact of the natural disaster.
