Ibadan Poly Students Protest Renaming of Institution After Ex-Governor Olunloyo

Tension erupted at the Oyo State Government Secretariat on Monday as students of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, stormed the premises to protest the recent move by the state government to rename their institution after a former governor, Dr. Omololu Olunloyo.

The aggrieved students, wielding placards and chanting solidarity songs, demanded the immediate reversal of the renaming decision announced by the state authorities last week. They insisted that while they respected the legacy of the former governor, the name of the institution should remain unchanged.

Security operatives were seen stationed at strategic points around the secretariat to prevent the protest from escalating, while traffic was temporarily disrupted along Agodi-Government House axis due to the students’ presence.

Speaking on behalf of the protesters, the Students’ Union President said the decision was made without proper consultation with key stakeholders, including students, alumni, and staff.

“We are not against honouring past leaders, but it should not be at the expense of our identity. The Polytechnic, Ibadan, has a long-standing name and reputation that must be preserved,” he said.
