The 19 Northern governors, in collaboration with the chairpersons of the Northern States Traditional Rulers Council, have called for accelerated efforts to address the region’s worsening security challenges.
The leaders made this known in a six-point communiqué issued at the end of their meeting, convened by the Northern Governors’ Forum (NGF), held on Saturday in Kaduna.
The NGF, acknowledging the importance of non-partisan collaboration, discussed ways to enhance the security architecture in the region and across Nigeria.
“The Forum commends President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his sustained commitment to addressing security challenges and infrastructure deficits in Northern Nigeria,” the communiqué stated.
Key resolutions from the meeting include:
Liaising with the Nigerian Governors Forum to develop strategies for increased support to federal security agencies.
Strengthening local initiatives to tackle insecurity at the grassroots.
Setting up inter-state platforms to coordinate surveillance across shared borders.
Supporting the establishment of state police and urging the National Assembly to expedite legislation to enable its implementation.
The forum emphasized the urgency of institutional reform to enable more localized responses to insecurity and reiterated its commitment to working with relevant stakeholders for sustainable solutions.
The next meeting of the forum is scheduled to take place on 30 August 2025.
