The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has urged Muslims across Nigeria to begin the search for the crescent moon of Zulhijja 1446AH on Tuesday, May 27, 2025.
This announcement was made in a statement released by the Wazirin Sokoto and Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Professor Sambo Wali Junaidu.
According to the statement, the sighting effort coincides with the 29th day of Zulki’ida 1446AH in the Islamic calendar. The Sultan urged faithful observers to report any confirmed sighting to the nearest District or Village Head. These reports are to be forwarded immediately to the Sultan’s office for official confirmation.
The sighting of the new moon signals the beginning of the sacred month of Zulhijja—a significant period in the Islamic calendar during which millions of Muslims around the world observe the Hajj pilgrimage and celebrate Eid al-Adha, the Festival of Sacrifice.
