NAFDAC Operation in Suleja Market Nets Banned Goods and Counterfeit Items

In Niger State, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) shut down a warehouse managed by Alhaji Ahmed. The reason for the closure was the discovery of substantial amounts of Monosodium Glutamate (MSG), stored in 25kg bags. The importation of this product into Nigeria is prohibited. Further action at the Ibrahim Babangida International Market led to the seizure of substandard, unregistered, and imitation goods, with an estimated value exceeding ₦47 million.

The seized goods included counterfeit Oral-B toothpaste, foreign spaghetti that is not permitted for sale, and unregistered items like Bamboo Charcoal toothpaste, “Crogate” and “Cloguide” triple-action toothpaste, along with tampered “Colgate” toothpaste. Several businesses are now under investigation, with authorities examining their stock.

Due to both health and regulatory issues, monosodium glutamate, a sodium salt often utilized in the manufacturing of Ajinomoto seasoning, also recognized as “White Maggi,” has been banned from large-scale importation into Nigeria. NAFDAC is urging consumers to refrain from using repackaged MSG and other food additives that lack appropriate labeling.

To ensure adherence to safety and quality standards, all products are required to display a valid NAFDAC Registration Number, manufacturing and expiry dates, a batch number, and the manufacturer’s address.
