The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria has relocated 484 Nigerian pilgrims after a fire broke out in their hotel in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, on Saturday.
The affected hotel, Imaratus Sanan, located on Shari Mansur Street, was accommodating pilgrims from six Nigerian private tour operator companies when the fire incident occurred around noon (Saudi Arabian time).
Although no casualties were recorded, the fire caused panic among the occupants. However, all the pilgrims were safely evacuated and are now in Mina, observing core Hajj rites, the Commission said.
NAHCON’s Assistant Director of Information and Publication, Fatima Sanda Usara, confirmed the incident in a statement, noting that swift intervention by Saudi emergency responders and hotel staff helped contain the fire before it could spread further.
Reacting to the incident, the NAHCON Chairman, Prof. Abdullahi Saleh, led a delegation to inspect the facility and assess the damage.
“The safety and comfort of our pilgrims remain our top priority. We have since arranged immediate alternative accommodation for the affected pilgrims and are working closely with the affected tour operators to provide all necessary support,” Prof. Saleh assured.
The Commission commended the prompt response of Saudi authorities and reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare of all Nigerian pilgrims currently performing Hajj.
