The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has strongly condemned the killing of two Nigerian nationals in South Africa, describing the attack as “barbaric and senseless.”
Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of NiDCOM, in a statement released through the commission’s spokesperson, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, decried the fatal shooting of the victims identified simply as Austin and Ayo. The two men were reportedly gunned down in Durban by masked assailants in what appeared to be a targeted hit.
Dabiri-Erewa expressed outrage over the incident, insisting that the South African authorities must launch a thorough investigation and bring the culprits to justice.
“This is yet another unprovoked and heartbreaking killing of Nigerians in South Africa,” she said, adding that the early warning mechanism established between both countries to curb such attacks has not been fully activated by the South African government.
Sources revealed that the attackers stormed Austin’s office and opened fire at close range, killing both men instantly.
The NiDCOM boss extended her condolences to the bereaved families and assured them that the Nigerian mission in South Africa is closely monitoring the situation.
Amid growing anxiety within the Nigerian community in South Africa, Dabiri-Erewa called for calm, urging citizens not to resort to retaliation but to await the outcome of official investigations.
She also disclosed that the Acting Nigerian High Commissioner in South Africa has formally demanded a fair and comprehensive probe into the killings.
