Vice President Kashim Shettima has arrived in Johannesburg, South Africa, to represent Nigeria at the G20 Leaders’ Summit, scheduled for Saturday, 22nd, and Sunday, 23rd November 2025, at the Johannesburg Expo Centre.
The Vice President is set to engage with foreign leaders and development partners on critical issues including the economy, security, climate change, and sustainable development.
Shettima was received at the Waterkloof Air Force Base by Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun; Chargé d’Affaires, Amb. Alexander Ajayi; Consul General, Ambassador Umar Bashir; and other diplomatic officials.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who was initially expected to attend following an invitation from South African President and current G20 Chair, Cyril Ramaphosa, delegated Vice President Shettima to the summit. The President remains in Nigeria to receive security briefings after the abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi State and the attack on worshippers at Christ Apostolic Church in Eruku, Kwara State.

Themed “Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability,” the two-day summit will bring together leaders of the world’s top 20 economies, along with representatives from the European Union, African Union, and key international financial institutions. Discussions will centre on financing for development, debt burdens, climate change, and equitable food systems through three panel sessions.

Vice President Shettima is also expected to hold bilateral meetings to advance Nigeria’s Renewed Hope Agenda, and deliberate on regional and international peace, security, and development.
