The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has successfully enrolled 59,786 inmates in correctional centres across the country into the National Identity Database.
This was disclosed in a statement by the Head of Corporate Communications at NIMC, Kayode Adegoke, who said the initiative is being carried out in collaboration with the Nigerian Correctional Service.
According to the statement, the exercise is part of ongoing efforts to promote inclusivity in governance in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
“So far, 74 per cent of inmates in correctional centres nationwide have been enrolled, while efforts are ongoing to capture the remaining inmates,” the statement read.
The Commission also revealed that plans are underway to commence enrolment at the ward level across Nigeria, in a bid to make the National Identity System more accessible at the grassroots.
The Director General of NIMC, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, reiterated the agency’s commitment to expanding enrolment coverage across the country.
“We will continue to work with our partners to ensure that every Nigerian and legal resident is enrolled and issued a NIN,” she said.
