NSA Ribadu Meets Itsekiri, Ijaw, Urhobo Leaders Over Rising Tensions, Ward Crisis in Warri

The National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, on Monday held a crucial meeting with stakeholders from the Itsekiri, Ijaw, and Urhobo ethnic nationalities in Abuja to address rising tensions and the ongoing ward delineation crisis in the Warri Federal Constituency of Delta State.

The meeting, which took place at the Office of the National Security Adviser, was convened in response to growing concerns over ethnic rivalry and agitations surrounding the delineation of electoral wards in Warri, a region with a history of delicate inter-ethnic relations.

Present at the meeting were traditional rulers, community leaders, youth representatives, officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and representatives of the Delta State Government.

Mallam Ribadu reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to peaceful coexistence, fairness, and national unity. He stressed that resolving the issue amicably was critical to sustaining peace and security in the Niger Delta region.

“We are here to listen and work with you all towards a solution. Nigeria belongs to all of us, and we must ensure equity, peace, and justice in every part of the country,” Ribadu said.

The NSA warned against actions or utterances that could incite violence, stating that the government would not hesitate to take necessary steps to prevent any breakdown of law and order.

Stakeholders from the three ethnic groups took turns to present their positions, historical grievances, and expectations regarding the contentious ward delineation exercise. They all expressed a willingness to work towards a peaceful resolution, while urging INEC to adopt a more transparent and inclusive approach in handling the matter.

In separate interviews after the meeting, Chief Emmanuel Ekpobaro of the Ijaw delegation, Chief Felix Omatseye representing the Itsekiri, and Chief Peter Oghenero of the Urhobo community all commended the NSA for the timely intervention and called for the swift implementation of the outcomes of the meeting.

The ward delineation crisis has triggered protests and tensions in parts of Delta State, with various groups alleging marginalisation and political exclusion.

The NSA assured the stakeholders that the government would work with all relevant institutions to ensure a just and lasting resolution, while maintaining peace and stability in the region.
