The management of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, has announced the death of an 18-year-old Part Three medical student of the institution.
The deceased, identified as Timilehin Adetoye Toromade, a student of the College of Health Sciences, Department of Medicine and Surgery, was said to have died in his sleep in the early hours of Tuesday, January 6, 2026.
A statement issued by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, disclosed that the incident came as a shock to the university community. According to the statement, one of the student’s roommates said the deceased was last seen alive around 2am when he opened the door for a fellow student, suggesting he may have died shortly afterwards.
The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Adebayo Simeon Bamire, described the death as tragic and deeply distressing, noting that it had plunged the institution into mourning.
Bamire, who spoke on behalf of the Visitor, Governing Council, Senate, staff and students, expressed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, friends and colleagues of the deceased.
He said the loss of a young student with a promising future in medicine was painful, adding that the entire university community was united in grief over the untimely death.
The university management stated that it was working with relevant authorities to ascertain the exact circumstances surrounding the incident in line with standard medical and investigative procedures.
The statement added that support mechanisms had been put in place to provide psychological and emotional assistance to students and staff affected by the loss.
The management also urged members of the university community to remain calm, compassionate and prayerful during the period of mourning.
The late student was admitted into the university in the 2022 academic session and had shown commitment to his medical training before his sudden death.
