Former Delta State governorship aspirant, Dr. O’Diakpo Obire, has criticised Peter Obi’s defection from the Labour Party (LP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing it as a failure of leadership.
In an interview with Arise News on Tuesday, Obire argued that strong political leaders do not abandon their parties but work to strengthen them. He said Obi’s move followed the collapse of LP’s organisational structure after the 2023 general elections.
“If a leader can mobilise people and resources effectively, he should have been able to rebuild the party after the elections. Instead, the structure fell apart,” Obire said.
Obire noted that Obi not only inherited a weak party framework but also contributed to its disintegration, leaving LP fragmented. He added that ADC, where Obi has now moved, lacks a solid foundation and is composed mainly of disgruntled politicians, casting doubt on Obi’s prospects there.
“The party he has joined is essentially a collection of dissatisfied individuals. There is no assurance that he will secure its presidential ticket,” Obire said.
While critical of the opposition, Obire commended the current administration under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for implementing reforms with long-term vision. “The government is taking bold steps for the nation’s future. Tackling Nigeria’s challenges requires patience and decisive action, and that is what is happening,” he said.

Obire, however, clarified that he has no plans to run for office and pledged his support to APC candidates in the 2027 elections.
