ODCHC BOSS Applauds Governor Aiyedatiwa for Expanding Health Insurance Coverage in Ondo

Akure, Nigeria – The Director-General of the Ondo State Contributory Health Commission (ODCHC), Dr. Abiodun Oyeneyin, has commended Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa for his unwavering commitment to improving healthcare delivery in the state, particularly through expanded access to health insurance.

Speaking during a sensitisation programme for local government workers in Akure, Dr. Oyeneyin highlighted the Governor’s notable strides in driving key health initiatives such as the ABIYAMO Scheme, the Basic Health Care Provision Fund Programme (Ilera Loro Scheme), and the ORANGE Health Insurance Scheme (ORANGHIS), which targets both the formal and informal sectors.

Dr. Oyeneyin disclosed that the ORANGHIS scheme tailored for retirees has already commenced, with strategic efforts underway to bring more retired workers on board. He emphasized that the ODCHC remains focused on delivering inclusive health coverage to all demographics, including public servants, private sector workers, and vulnerable populations.

“Access to care under the ORANGHIS scheme began in December 2022,” he noted. “The Commission has engaged three Third-Party Administrators—United Healthcare, LifeWorth Healthcare, and International Healthcare Management Services (IHMS)—to ensure effective implementation.”

He outlined several measures adopted to guarantee seamless service delivery, including monthly capitation dispatch to providers, prompt payments, continuous quality improvement, regular issuance of authorisation codes, public sensitisation, and the strict enforcement of the no out-of-pocket policy for covered services.

Addressing the scheme’s funding structure, Dr. Oyeneyin clarified that the monthly premium is set at 3 per cent of gross salary, with 1.2 per cent contributed by the employer and 0.6 per cent by the employee. He also announced that desk officers would soon be stationed in all local government areas to support the smooth rollout of the scheme.

Also speaking, Mrs. Aderonke Ibitoye, Director of Business Development and Client Relations at ODCHC, reminded enrollees of their right to choose a primary healthcare provider, with the option to change their provider once a year if necessary.

She added that enrollees are entitled to emergency care at any ODCHC-accredited provider outside their primary facility and should receive proper referral services. Mrs. Ibitoye urged beneficiaries to report any lapses in service delivery within 24 hours—or within 48 hours in emergencies—via dedicated TPA phone lines and WhatsApp numbers.

Health insurance, she said, plays a critical role in shielding residents from unexpected medical expenses and fostering a healthy, productive population. “It encourages preventive care and early detection of illnesses, thereby improving overall health outcomes,” she added.
