The Ondo State Security Network Agency, codenamed Amotekun, has arrested 39 suspected terrorists who reportedly fled Sokoto State following recent United States airstrikes in Nigeria’s North-West region.
The Commander of Amotekun, Chief Adetunji Adeleye, disclosed this while parading suspected criminals arrested across the state on Tuesday. He said the suspects claimed they relocated to Ondo after security operations intensified in northern parts of the country.
Adeleye explained that the suspects were intercepted in forest areas of the state during joint security patrols and are currently undergoing profiling. According to him, those found in possession of incriminating items will be prosecuted, while others may be returned to their states of origin.
He noted that the Ondo State Government had maintained that no individual is permitted to occupy forest reserves without approval, adding that the sudden movement of unidentified persons into the forests raised security concerns.
The Amotekun commander added that collaboration between border patrol teams in Ondo, Ekiti, Osun, and Ogun states had strengthened intelligence gathering and led to multiple arrests beyond those paraded.
Providing an update on other cases, Adeleye said a total of 100 suspects were arrested across the state, with 61 paraded. The offences include kidnapping, violations of anti-open grazing laws, breach of public peace, and gender-based violence.
He further disclosed that three suspects were arrested in connection with alleged rape cases in Akure, noting that investigations were ongoing.
Adeleye commended Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa for supporting security operations in the state and acknowledged the cooperation of sister security agencies and residents in tackling crime.
