
The Ondo State Government has approved the annual payment of the Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF) to all regular and supranumerary resident doctors at the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital (UNIMEDTH).
The approval, granted by Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, is aimed at strengthening the residency training programme and boosting the morale of resident doctors in the state-owned teaching hospital. The MRTF will be paid yearly to all eligible resident doctors.
Reacting to the development, the Chief Medical Director of UNIMEDTH, Dr. Michael Gbala, expressed deep appreciation to the governor for what he described as a thoughtful and impactful intervention, noting that it would significantly improve the quality, stability and attractiveness of the residency training programme at the institution.
Dr. Gbala also commended the governor for his sustained commitment to upgrading the teaching hospital with modern medical equipment, including Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computed Tomography (CT) Scan, 3D Mammography, digital X-ray systems, 4D ultrasound machines, endoscopy suites, new Intensive Care Unit (ICU) equipment, full In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) and Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) facilities, as well as neonatal intensive care unit equipment.
According to him, the strategic investments are geared towards transforming UNIMEDTH into a top-notch, well-equipped tertiary healthcare facility capable of delivering world-class training and quality patient care. He added that the planned construction of new clinical quarters would further boost staff morale, enhance welfare and promote the delivery of excellent clinical services.
The Chief Medical Director further expressed gratitude to the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Taiwo Fasoranti; the Head of Service, Mr. Bayo Phillips; the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Banji Ajaka; and the Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, Prof. Michael Odimayo, for their unwavering support and constructive engagement with the hospital’s management.
Dr. Gbala reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to excellence in healthcare delivery, training and research, stressing that the continuous support of the Ondo State Government remains a strong source of motivation for both management and staff.
