Ondo Govt Pledges Stronger Backing for Igogo Festival

…as Aiyedatiwa hails Olowo of Owo

The Ondo State Government has reiterated its commitment to promoting tourism as a tool for peace, unity and economic development, with a pledge to scale up support for the annual Igogo Festival in Owo.

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, represented by his deputy, Olayide Adelami, gave the assurance on Sunday during the grand finale of the 2025 edition of the cultural fiesta.

Describing the state as one of Nigeria’s most culturally endowed, Aiyedatiwa said the Igogo Festival had become more than a display of tradition, noting that it has consistently strengthened unity among the Owo people while preserving their heritage.

“This festival is a living bridge between our glorious past and our present reality,” the governor said. “By keeping Igogo alive, the people of Owo are not only honouring the memory of Queen Oronsen but also projecting enduring values of love, unity and respect.”

He disclosed that Igogo is one of five major festivals his administration has accorded official recognition, stressing that tourism, arts and the creative economy remain central to his government’s agenda for sustainable growth. Aiyedatiwa also urged private investors and multinationals to partner with the state in repositioning the sector.

The governor congratulated the Olowo of Owo, Oba Ajibade Gbadegesin, and the community for successfully hosting the festival, assuring them of his administration’s support to make the celebration a global cultural brand.

In his remarks, Oba Gbadegesin said the festival, which dates back more than six centuries, has continued to grow in prominence. He revealed that this year’s edition attracted cultural enthusiasts from countries including Australia, Canada, the US and the UK.

“Since I ascended the throne in 2019, I have worked deliberately to raise the profile of Igogo,” the monarch said. “We are happy to welcome visitors from across the world who have joined us in celebrating our heritage.”

The traditional ruler commended the state government for fostering a partnership that not only enriches the cultural identity of Owo but also contributes to economic expansion. He also lauded sons and daughters of the town for their support in sustaining the festival.

Also speaking, the state Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Afolabi Adesoji, praised Governor Aiyedatiwa for recognizing tourism as a key pillar of the administration’s OUR EASE development agenda.

The Igogo Festival, which lasts 17 days, reached its climax on Sunday with the Olowo leading a colourful procession across parts of the ancient town and performing symbolic rites that date back generations.
