In a major boost to emergency healthcare, the Ondo State Government on Wednesday unveiled a fleet of new ambulances aimed at improving pre-hospital care across the state.
The launch of the State Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance System took place in Akure, with Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa stressing that the initiative is part of his administration’s plan to overhaul healthcare delivery. Represented by his deputy, Olayide Adelami, the governor said timely intervention during medical emergencies could save countless lives.
“Road accidents, medical crises, and obstetric complications are common and often fatal because help doesn’t arrive on time. This initiative ensures that everyone, rich or poor, can access emergency care immediately,” Aiyedatiwa said.
He disclosed that the government would cover transport and treatment costs for the first 48 hours of emergencies under the National Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance System. The governor also announced the reactivation of a 24-hour call center, fully equipped with modern communication tools to coordinate prompt emergency responses.
More than 100 frontline responders have undergone training to handle emergencies, with continuous programs planned to keep personnel updated on modern medical techniques.
Speaking at the event, Hajia Fatima Ciroma, Director-General of the National Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance System, described the scheme as a “game-changer,” noting that it would ease pressure on hospitals by ensuring patients receive care while en route. She said the system features basic and advanced life support ambulances, tricycle (keke) ambulances, and highly trained personnel to respond to road accidents, domestic incidents, obstetric emergencies, and other critical cases.
Samuel Ibitoye, Ondo State Commandant of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), hailed the initiative as a significant step in road safety management, commending the government for reviving the Ondo State Emergency Medical Services Agency (ODEMSA), once a reference point in emergency services.

The flag-off ceremony attracted top government officials and private sector partners, including Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Taiwo Fasoranti; Special Adviser on Health, Prof. Simi Odimayo; and Deputy Chief of Staff, Dr. Kola Falohun.
