
Akure — Ondo State health authorities have kicked off preparations for a robust 2026 Annual Operational Plan (AOP), urging programme officers across the Ministry, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to actively contribute to shaping the state’s healthcare future.
The call was made by the Hon. Commissioner for Health, Dr. Banji Ajaka, during the opening of a three-day residential workshop for key health programme officers in Akure on Wednesday.

Dr. Ajaka stressed that the success of the 2026 health agenda depends on the commitment and innovative input of the officers. He also commended development partners, especially the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI), for their continued assistance, while urging more collaboration to strengthen healthcare delivery.
He further applauded Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa for his investments in the sector, emphasizing that all stakeholders must ensure residents benefit from improved medical services across the state.
Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr. Adeniran Ikuomola, described the attendees as influential decision-makers whose work would determine the health landscape of Ondo State next year. He urged them to focus on achievable objectives and base their proposals on thorough evidence and research.

Chairman of the State Hospitals’ Management Board, Dr. Victor Olusegun Ategbole, hailed the governor’s proactive approach to healthcare, noting that his administration has prioritized residents’ access to quality medical services.
CHAI’s State Lead, Mr. Olamide Ayedun, stated that the organisation, with funding from Global Affairs Canada, has been offering technical and financial support to advance health programs, promising continued partnership for sector growth.
Dr. Samuel Akingbesote, representing the Institute of Human Virology, Nigeria, reaffirmed his institute’s backing to strengthen state health coordination and ensure residents receive effective services.

UNICEF’s representative in Ondo, Mr. Tunde Ayoade, described the workshop as a clear sign of the state’s dedication to coordinated health planning. He noted that the outcomes would enhance systems and directly improve the well-being of women, children, and families, promising UNICEF’s ongoing technical guidance to bring plans to fruition.
