Ondo State FP Coordinator Opeyemi Agunbiade Urges Nurses to Lead Beyond the Bedside

As part of activities marking the 2025 International Nurses Week, the Ondo State Family Planning Coordinator and seasoned reproductive health expert, Mrs. Opeyemi Elizabeth Agunbiade, urged nurses to embrace emerging opportunities and broaden their scope during an inspiring lecture delivered at the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo.

The lecture, organized by the UNIMED Student Nurses Association, was titled “The Versatile Nurse: Explore Opportunities Beyond the Bedside.” Agunbiade passionately called on nurses—especially emerging professionals—to embrace leadership roles, champion health policies, diversify, and integrate digital innovation into their practice.

“The era of nurses being confined to bedside care is over,” she stated. “To build a resilient and equitable health system, nurses must step forward as leaders, policy advocates, and digital health innovators.”

Drawing from her extensive experience in family planning, adolescent health, and community health systems, Agunbiade made a compelling case for nurses to take center stage in shaping the future of healthcare in Nigeria.

“Our healthcare future relies on nurses who are bold, informed, and equipped to lead in complex and evolving environments,” she emphasized.

The lecture received a standing ovation from students, faculty members, and health professionals in attendance.

In her remarks, the Dean of the College of Nursing Science at UNIMED, Prof. Edward M., described the lecture as “a transformative call to action that truly reflects the evolving role and potential of nurses in Nigeria.”

She reaffirmed UNIMED’s commitment to nurturing well-rounded nurses who can serve effectively within and beyond hospital walls.
