AKURE, Nigeria — Officials involved in social protection across Ondo State recently participated in a specialized training on sign language interpretation, aimed at bridging the communication gap between duty bearers and persons with hearing impairments.
The workshop, funded by the Disability Rights Fund (@DisabRightsFund), was facilitated by sign language expert Hamed Ayobami Azeez, who emphasized the importance of accessibility as a human right and a core part of inclusive governance.

“This is not just about learning a new language,” Azeez said. “It’s about ensuring that every citizen has equal access to information and services.”
Participants from various ministries and agencies described the session as impactful and pledged to integrate inclusive communication practices into their work.

The initiative reflects Ondo State’s growing commitment to accessibility and aligns with Nigeria’s obligations under the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
