The Ondo State Government has launched a quarterly review meeting for its Primary Healthcare (PHC) system, reinforcing its commitment to improving healthcare services across the state.
Governor Dr. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa announced this during the inaugural 2025 quarterly meeting of the Ondo State Task Force on Primary Health Care held in Akure on Friday.
Speaking at the event, Governor Aiyedatiwa reaffirmed his administration’s focus on boosting the health sector, with particular attention to strengthening primary healthcare across Ondo’s 18 Local Government Areas.
“Our administration remains committed to significant investments in health services, from primary care to higher levels of healthcare. We will intensify efforts on sector reforms, enhance service delivery, and ensure equitable access for every resident,” he said.
The Governor described the meeting as a timely intervention, highlighting the state’s challenges with both communicable and non-communicable diseases alongside maternal and child health issues. He emphasized the need for proactive strategies amid evolving global health threats.
Dr. Aiyedatiwa also commended the Task Force for their performance during the recent epidemic response and urged sustained collaboration among ministries, local governments, healthcare providers, development partners, and the private sector.
He outlined five priority areas for focus in the quarterly reviews:
Strengthening the primary healthcare system
Expanding immunization and disease surveillance
Improving maternal and child health indicators
Promoting health education in rural communities
Ensuring transparency, accountability, and optimal resource use
The Governor also declared that the quarterly meetings would serve as a platform to assess progress, tackle challenges, and develop actionable solutions, pledging the government’s full support and political will to implement recommendations.
Appreciating the roles of local government chairmen, traditional rulers, religious leaders, health workers, market leaders, and development partners, Governor Aiyedatiwa expressed confidence that the task force’s work would lead to a more resilient and accessible healthcare system.
Dr. Francis Akanbiemu, Permanent Secretary of the Ondo State Primary Health Care Development Agency, praised the Governor’s support, especially in funding PHC upgrades and ensuring vaccine potency through diesel provision. He noted that Ondo recently won the South West leadership award in healthcare, attributing this to the government’s political will.
Prof. Simidele Odimayo, Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, lauded ongoing efforts including the establishment of a Federal Teaching Hospital and the approval of new health worker recruitments. He encouraged continued stakeholder collaboration to advance the health sector.
WHO representative Mr. Moses also congratulated the state on its achievements and pledged continued support from development partners.
This new quarterly review initiative marks a major step in Ondo State’s strategy to enhance healthcare delivery, particularly at the grassroots level.
