Ondo State — In a decisive effort to combat the rising incidence of cervical cancer among young girls, Girl Effect Nigeria, a leading non-governmental organisation dedicated to empowering adolescent girls, has officially launched its Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination campaign in Ondo State.
The campaign, titled “OYA,” is being implemented with the support of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, and in partnership with the Ondo State Primary Health Care Development Agency (OSPHCDA).
At the launch event, health officials and stakeholders highlighted the critical role of early HPV vaccination in protecting girls aged 9 to 14 from cervical cancer, a disease primarily caused by persistent HPV infection.
Organisers explained that the campaign aims to boost awareness, increase demand, and improve access to the HPV vaccine within communities across Ondo State.
Officials described the initiative as timely and well-aligned with Nigeria’s national strategy to reduce cervical cancer through mass immunisation.
Girl Effect Nigeria reaffirmed its commitment to innovative strategies that empower girls with essential information and healthcare services, emphasising that the OYA campaign will not only promote vaccination but also strengthen girls’ voices and their rights to quality healthcare.
