The Lagos State Chairman of the Labour Party, Pastor (Dr.) Mrs. Dayo Ekong, has taken a swipe at the party’s former presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, warning that his recent political maneuvers are tearing down the same platform that once lifted him to national prominence.
In a strongly-worded post on her official X handle (@PstDayoEkong), Ekong said the Labour Party, once seen as the rallying point for Nigerians yearning for change, is now plagued by division, weak structures, and fading relevance. She blamed Obi’s “inconsistent antics” for the party’s woes, arguing that his influence in national politics is slipping fast.
“Obi must understand that the momentum of 2023 was not by his strength alone. It was a collective grace, driven by the party, grassroots mobilisation, and Nigerians’ hunger for change. But today, his choices are weakening that foundation,” Ekong declared.
She pointed to Labour’s recent electoral defeats as evidence of Obi’s declining grip. In Edo, despite his vigorous campaign for Olumide Akpata, the LP candidate was trounced by APC’s Monday Okpebholo. Similarly, in Imo, Obi’s support for Senator Athan Achonu could not stop a landslide victory for Governor Hope Uzodimma.
Even more damning, she said, was Obi’s sudden switch of allegiance in the recent Anambra by-elections, a move she described as “confusing and disloyal,” which left supporters disenchanted and fractured party loyalty.
“With these repeated failures, it is clear Obi’s political charm has lost its shine. His interventions no longer inspire confidence but rather disrupt cohesion and alienate allies,” Ekong fired.
She called on Obi to step back, reflect, and allow the party to rebuild its unity, warning that continued missteps could consign the Labour Party to political irrelevance.
