Police Rescue 80-Year-Old, Kill Six Suspects, Arrest 12 in Crackdown on Kidnappers, Robbers

The Nigeria Police Force has recorded fresh gains in its battle against violent crimes across the country, with the rescue of an octogenarian, arrest of 12 suspects, and killing of six armed criminals during a series of coordinated operations.

A statement issued by the Force on Sunday revealed that officers of the Federal Capital Territory Police Command dismantled a notorious armed robbery and carjacking gang in Maitama. Acting on intelligence, operatives intercepted the suspects while they were reportedly plotting an attack, leading to a fierce gun duel. A most-wanted member of the gang, Abdulmininu Bello, also known as Babanle, was gunned down, while seven others were arrested.

Among items recovered were four AK-47 rifles, two locally fabricated pistols, a shotgun, over 20 rounds of ammunition, a Toyota Camry, and a motorcycle.

In a related development in Jigawa State, police officers rescued an 80-year-old kidnap victim and neutralized five armed abductors during a daring raid on their hideout located between Danzomo and Medi villages. The operation, which was based on credible intelligence, also led to the arrest of five suspects including the gang leader.

Recovered items included several firearms, ammunition, motorcycles, and mobile phones. The elderly victim, police confirmed, was rescued unharmed and later discharged from the hospital following medical evaluation.

Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, praised the operatives for their “bravery and professionalism,” urging Nigerians to continue cooperating with the police by providing timely intelligence.

“The Force remains resolute in its commitment to safeguarding lives and maintaining national security across the country,” the IGP said.
